Pharmaceutical history - October 2nd
In October 2nd 1989 the FDA approved as a new molecular entity the active pharmaceutical ingredient Propofol under the trade name Diprivan, manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Fresenius Kabi USA inc.
Propofol is a hypnotic alkylphenol derivative. Formulated for intravenous induction of sedation and hypnosis during anesthesia, propofol facilitates inhibitory neurotransmission mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
John B. Glen, a British veterinarian and researcher at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) spent 13 years developing propofol, an effort which led to the awarding to him of the prestigious 2018 Lasker Award for clinical research.
Michael Jackson died of acute propofol intoxication. Additional drugs found in Michael’s system were the depressants midazolam and diazepam, the painkiller Lidocaine, and the stimulant ephedrine. His doctor, Conrad Murray, was convicted of causing the singer’s death by giving Michael the propofol that caused him to stop breathing.
