Students will be able to

- Recognize and recall integers and their representation on the number line
- Extend their knowledge of addition and subtraction of integers to word problems

Introduction ( Prerequisite Knowledge)

Natural numbers are all numbers 1, 2, 3, 4… They are the numbers you usually count and they will continue on into infinity. Whole numbers are all natural numbers including 0 e.g. 0, 1,2 …..  Integers include all whole numbers and their negative counterparts

Explanation

Draw the following

Representation of integers on a number line

Positive numbers always lie on the right side of zero

, negative numbers always lie on the left side of zero, and

arrowheads on both ends of the line are meant to suggest

that the line continues indefinitely in the positive and

 negative directions.

Students this should enable you to do NCERT Ex 1.1 – 1

NCERT Ex 1.1
Question 3. At Srinagar temperature was –5C on Monday and then it dropped by 2C on Tuesday. What was the temperature of Srinagar on Tuesday? On Wednesday, it rose by 4C. What was the temperature on this day?
Answer:
On Monday, temperature at Srinagar = –5°C
On Tuesday, temperature dropped = 2°C
Temperature on Tuesday = –5°C – 2°C = –7°C
On Wednesday, temperature rose up = 4°C
Temperature on Wednesday = –7°C + 4°C = –3°CThus, temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday was –7°and –3°Crespectively.
