There is one person named Mohammed Younus who is a close aid of Nehrus. He requested Indira Gandhi to get sanjay Gandhi married to a Muslim girl he knew. But sanjay refused and married Maneka aged 18, a Punjabi . Due to her age she does not know the importance of Indira Gandhi. Also Maneka is an animal lover and strict vegetarian.

So the rift started between two. At the age of 23, with her son 100 days old Sanjay met with plane accident and died.Then she thought of contesting Lok sabha from amethi . But then Indira Gandhi was murdered and Rajiv Gandhi became prime Minister and contested from Amethi and defeated Maneka. Then in next election Maneka shifted to Pilibhit Loksabha constituency.

Favoritism to Sonia Gandhi because there is no other option.

Also Sonia was content being just a house wife back then, whereas Maneka, appeared to stand up to Mrs. Indira Gandhi. There could also be other reasons, which as common men, we may not even be aware of.
