FORGETTING : SUMMARY OF THE LESSON

Introduction : Forgetting is taken from the volume of Robert Lynd's essays entitled I

Tremble to Think. He deals with the subject taking in view all possible pros and cons.

Forgetfulness: A list of articles lost by rnilway travellers and now on sale at a London station was published. People were astonished at the forgetfulness of their fellows. Modern man remembers so many things. In his ordinary life, he remembers almost everything that he is expected to remember Almost everybody remembers to do the right thing at the right moment.

There are some matters. Memory does not work perfectly in them. A person forgets to take the medicine his doctor has prescribed for him. The fact is that few but the moral giants remember to take their medicine regularly. Freud and other psychologists hold that we forget things we do not like.

Guilt of forgetting : People forget to post letters. The writer does not trust a departing visitor to post an important letter. He himself forgets to post letters. He carries the letter in his hand even then he forgets to post it. Weary of holding it in his hand, he puts it in his pocket and forgets all about it. When after some time he is asked questions that ashame him, he produces the evidence of his guilt from his pocket.

People forget umbrellas and walking sticks. The writer loses his walking-stick very frequently. He does not carry an umbrella for fear of losing it. He is such a person who has never lost an umbrella in his life.

The Youth: It is the young rather than the adult who forget things. A number of footballs and cricket-bats are forgotten by the boys who return from the games. It is because their imaginations are filled with the vision of the playing-field. Anglers are generally said to be the most imaginative of men. The fishing-rod of reality is forgotten by him as he day-dreams over the feats of the fishing-rod of Utopia. The absent-minded man is often a man who is making the best of life and therefore has no time to remember the ordinary things.

Some say that a man who is a perfect remembering machine is seldom a man of the first intelligence. The writer thinks that, on the whole, the great writers and the great composers of music have been men with exceptional powers of memory. On the other hand, statesmen seem to have extraordinarily bad memories. The facts in the autobiographies and speeches of statesmen are challenged so frequently.

Memory of ordinary man: At the same time, ordinarily good memory is so common that we regard a man who does not possess it eccentric. A father took his baby out in a pram. It was a sunny morning. When he passed by a public-house, he slipped into it for a glass of beer and disappeared through the door of the saloon bar. Before lunch he returned home. He came in smiling cheerfully and asked his wife, "Well, my dear, what's for lunch today ?" He had forgotten all about the baby and the fact that he had taken it out with him. How many men below the rank of a philosopher would be capable of such absent-mindedness as this ? The writer concludes that good memories make life dull.

 भूलने की बीमारी: लंदन के एक स्टेशन पर रेलवे यात्रियों द्वारा खोए गए लेखों की सूची और अब बिक्री पर प्रकाशित हुई थी।  लोग अपने साथियों की भूल पर चकित थे।  आधुनिक मनुष्य को बहुत सारी बातें याद हैं।  अपने सामान्य जीवन में, वह लगभग हर चीज को याद करता है जो कि उसे याद रखने की उम्मीद है लगभग हर कोई सही समय पर सही काम करने के लिए याद करता है।
