Summary of the Lesson 'A Girl with a Basket'
Introduction : William C. Douglas, a judge of the Supreme Court of America visited India in 1950. He met
different kinds of people. He noted how people felt after independence. He was much impressed by the decency and pride of Indians. He was especially moved by the conduct of a small, poor refugee girl. She is the main subject of this lesson.His journey : The writer was going Ranikhet. He went up to Bareilly by a slow moving train. It stopped at all the way stations. At every stop he walked the platform. He saw all sorts of people. They were very poor. He tried to talk to them to find out how they felt about things. He saw the Ganga, the forests and the villages.
The refugee children: At one station he could not talk to the people. A group of young refugee children surrounded him at the platform. They were selling hand-woven reed baskets. Many persons in poor India could not buy their baskets.
They hoped that the rich American would buy their things, So they surrounded him. He bought four baskets and a few fans.
The girl : A beautiful girl of nine was very pushing. She had a lovely basket with a handle. She wanted a rupee and a half for it. There were tears in her eyes. He felt pity for her. But his arms were full.
The incident : As he did not need the basket, the author put a handful of change in her basket. But as soon as he did so, he felt that he had done wrong. The girl was displeased. With all the pride and graciousness of a grown-up lady, she returned the money to him. There was only one thing for him. He bought her basket. Then she ran home happily. The writer was very much impressed to see her sense of self-respect and dignified behaviour. It was a remarkable experience for him.
His feelings : The author had seen that everywhere Indians had pride and a sense of decency. They loved and valued their independence most. This girl had shown him the deep feelings of Indians.
