Creative Ideas of using GeoBoard for Mathematics Teaching and Learning -

What is a Geoboard?

It is a Mathematical tool which consists of a board on which nails are half driven and we use rubber bands for modeling a line segment, polygons etc.

Ideas of using GeoBoard

Here I am sharing some ideas of using GeoBoard at elementary and middle school level.

#1 Creating a geometrical shapes-

When we start learning of geometry the two dimension shape comes into picture. During the initial years children do recognition of shapes on the basis of look and feel. So, a great idea would be to ask children to make two dimensional shapes using the bands on the Geoboard.

  • Make different types of angles make different types of triangles on the basis of sides
  • Make different types of triangles on the basis of angles make a square of side 4 units.
  • Make a square of side 5 units. compare their areas. compare their perimeter.
  • Make a rectangle of length 5 units and breadth 3 units. What will be the area and perimeter of this rectangle?
  • Make a rectangle whose area is 20 sq units. Do we get many answers? make a square whose area is 25 square units. do we get many answers?
MORE IDEAS
  •  Make a quadrilateral of your choice make a convex and a concave quadrilateral of your choice
  • Make a parallelogram. Can you find its area? Make a parallelogram whose area is 15 square units
  • Make a rhombus. what specific do you notice in the diagonals

#2 Recreational Mathematics-

Children often fears from learning Mathematics. Recreational activities are helpful in creating interest in the subject.

  • Creating Line Designs
  • Playing with Tangram Pieces

#3 Development of Math concepts -

We can effectively use GeoBoard for development of concepts. This is quite useful for Kinesthetic Learners. Visualisation plays a great role and when children do on their own, they learn better.

  • Visualising Geometrical Results
  • Basic concepts of Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, division
  • Times Table
  • Area
  •
  • Symmetry
  • Reflection in mirror
  • Congruency
