Art Integrated Learning - An Experiential Learning.
• Concept of Art Integrated Learning
Art Integrated Learning is a pedagogical method of experiential learning. The concept of art integrated learning refers to the integration of art with other subjects.
The integration of art with other subjects means that different types of arts such as visual arts, performing arts and literary arts make teaching interesting and fun by becoming an integral part of the teaching-learning/learning-teaching process.
It also means making the syllabus an art-integrated one. In which art becomes the basis of learning in the classroom.
It especially helps to clarify abstract concepts if the syllabus includes art. The arts integrated syllabus can provide a means to combine the content of various subjects in logical, student-centred and meaningful ways.
A connection can be established between mathematics, science, social science and languages and their abstract concepts by placing art at the center. The subject matter can be taught effectively by linking it together. Learning in this way becomes holistic, enjoyable and experiential.
The methods of teaching learning can be made simple and effective with art integrated learning. Continuous and comprehensive evaluation of the arts can be used as skills and tools.
Sometimes learners cannot express their thoughts orally. If at that time the teaching and learning processes could be improved by giving them the help of art to express their feelings.
In the New Education Policy 2020, attention has been paid to make the teaching process effective through this art integrated teaching.
• What is Art Integrated Learning ?
Art integrated learning is the integration of art with learning and teaching of the subject matter of different syllabus areas. Subjects such as language, social studies, science and mathematics can be designed to interrelate with the arts. Sometimes art can explain the concept of science very simply.
Thus abstract concepts of subjects can be made easy to understand and embodied by using different art forms.
This method of learning helps to increase knowledge and understanding about the subject and it also promotes the appraisal of the arts. This is what is called holistic or complete teaching.
If art integrated learning is included in the process of teaching and learning in our school, then it will not only be interesting for the children, but the classroom will also become child-centred and enjoyable for the teachers.
Art provides a language for expression. This expression can be in visual art (painting, photography, sculpture) or performance form (dance, music, theatre, magic).
• What is the difference between art education and art integrated learning
Art education is the process that promotes sensory expressions. It provides a platform to work with ideas and materials to create expressions that cannot be expressed by words alone.
It encourages non-verbal expressions (which we cannot explain by speaking) to come out. Whether it is in the form of a song or a painting or a performance.
In art integrated learning, work is done by making art the main part of the curriculum. Abstract concepts of the subject matter can be explored using various art forms.
Art integrated classes provide learning experiences that engage the mind and body of the learner. In this way the arts enable children to use a variety of skills and abilities.
• What role can art play in making the learning process holistic and experiential?
Students go through different stages engaging with different forms of art. Such as observing, thinking, imagining, discovering, experimenting, arriving at a decision by reasoning, creating and expressing.
These steps require the actual participation of the following three areas: 1. Cognitive 2. Psycho-motivational and emotional.
It is experimental in nature and helps in holistic development of each learner. Due to this kind of experiential learning, they can be taught better in other subjects. Art serves as a basis in this.
• How does art integration help in achieving learning outcomes?
Art integration simultaneously impacts on three areas cognitive, psycho-motivational and affective that meet the pedagogical need for competency-based learning and ability-based learning outcomes.
• Why is art integrated learning considered a pleasurable way of learning?
The arts are a natural medium for the expression of any imagination and ideas. Through these, every learner has the freedom to have a unique and distinct identity.
Art integrated learning as a pedagogy at the school level provides a creative space for every learner to learn, experience and express something new without worrying about how their work will be done and what others think of them does.
In this the learner is encouraged to experience the art as a process and not to worry about the result. This helps them to overcome the fear associated with the subject and increases their joy of doing and learning.
The arts also discuss variations and provide each learner with alternative means of expression. Where they can explore and experience a subject more deeply without the pressures of consequences, it makes learning enjoyable.
• How does art integrated learning help in an inclusive framework of education?
The most important aspect of art is that there is no right or wrong answer. Knowledge is acquired in an experiential way.
There is no need to differentiate a work of art from the educated to the uneducated, from the general to the special needs group, or from girls to boys, as art is an expression of itself. It helps the underprivileged to express their feelings through works of art.
Similarly, people who belong to a community that has been subjected to social exclusion can work easily with others in the class, because art is a journey in which no one has all the answers.
Art activities help children to connect with each other so that barriers are gradually broken down and children belonging to different backgrounds can communicate with each other.
• Objective of Art integrated Learning
1. Objectives of Art Integrated Learning How to make art a medium of education and its impact on the learning and overall development of each child.
2. Using art experiences (of different art forms) as a medium to explore the child's creative expression.
3. To acquire the ability to make learning of various subjects interesting and to organize art experiences according to age.
4 Teaching on eligibility basis.
• The study points in Art Integrated Education can be as follows -
* Staged drama on the subject matter (on discarding social evils)
* Collectively by preparing posters (Water Conservation)
* Organizing speech, essay writing etc. for language skill development
* Explanation of science subject matter by experiment.
* Quize to increase reasoning ability, organize a debate on any social issue
* Using audio tape recorder for correct pronunciation
* Painting and sculpture to reveal sensory feelings
• The relationship of art education with other subjects
We often see the usefulness of art education in schools in three ways.
1. As an independent subject
2. as a medium of teaching other school subjects and
3. As an opportunity to develop life skills Under art education, learning can be made interesting by combining different arts.
• Arts Integrated Learning in Language
The main objective of language teaching in primary classes is to develop language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) as well as the development of abilities like imagination, sensitivity, etc.
Art integrated learning is a powerful means of increasing these skills and abilities. Such as providing opportunities for conversation to students, telling stories and poems, reciting and writing, teaching etc.
Even talking about writing skills under linguistic skills, children start them by drawing horizontal lines. Usually in the language of pedagogy this is called early writing.
> Activity -
The activity can be done by showing the picture.
1. conversation on pictures
2. Composition of story on pictures, composition of poetry
3. Writing articles/essays on pictures etc.
Organizing such activities keeping in mind the language textbooks in the classrooms can make language learning and teaching easy and enjoyable.
• Mathematics and Arts Integrated Learning
One of the major aims of mathematics is to understand the relationships between different objects. Counting, measurement and size are important in mathematics.
Art education helps children to recognize even and odd shapes, to create two dimensional or three dimensional figures. Through which children get experience of length, width, height, area etc. Along with patterns, begin to recognize the concepts of location, extent, direction and frequency.
Similarly, not only are familiar with terms like right, left, up, down, north, south, half turn and full turn but also understand their concepts.
> Activity -
1. kite making by all the children's
2. Decorate kites in different colors or give the appearance of a college.
3. After the kite is made, measure the length, breadth and diagonal of the kite.
4. Compare the finite, area, diagonal, etc. of the second kite made.
Identify and list natural and unnatural objects similar to geometric shapes such as -
Triangle - Christmas Tree
Circle - fruit, sun
Shape - table, book
• Environmental Studies and Arts Integrated Learning
The environment around us affects our senses. Through art education, we can understand and express the environment. The learning to keep the environment clean is learned from the painting environment, the same lesson, an artist can give by adding artistically to the environment in his creation.
Regional arts and handicrafts play an important role in the teaching of geography and environmental studies. Such as the rise and development of local handicraft traditions based on the availability of local raw materials.
To understand the work of craftsmen related to handicrafts and their livelihood, to develop a school museum on various environmental problems with local crafts and other items made by them.
> Activity -
To prepare a succinct report on any one of the Contemporary Art, Exhibition, Museum, Fort and Durg Fair.
