Emotional Intelligence : Denial Goleman
• What is emotional intelligence?
The term emotional intelligence was first coined by Peter Salovey and John D Mayer in 1990. According to him, "Emotional intelligence is the ability to observe and discriminate the emotions of oneself and others and to direct one's thoughts and behavior according to the information received."
The credit for popularizing the term emotional intelligence goes to American psychologist Daniel Goleman and the theory of emotional intelligence was also propounded by Goleman.
"Emotional Intelligence : Why It Can Matter More Than IQ?" The author of this book is Daniel Goleman. Goleman popularized emotional intelligence with this book written in 1995.
Daniel Goleman's second book is "Working with Emotional Intelligence" (1997). Salovey and John D Mayer book is "Emotional Development and Emotional Intelligence".
• What are the 4 elements of emotional intelligence?
Shailovi and Mayer have described the four elements of emotional intelligence -
1. Motivate yourself
2. Perception and managing your emotions
3. Managing others' emotions
4. Understanding others emotions.
Psychologist Hay has given four elements and 16 sub-elements of emotional intelligence -
1. Self awareness
2. Self management
3. Social awareness
4. Relationship management.
Goleman has listed 25 efficiency of emotional intelligence.
• What are the importance of emotional intelligence according to Goleman?
1. 80% of the success in life is contributed by emotional intelligence and 20% is contributed by intelligence.
2. The person who has high emotional intelligence will have high level of success.
3. The person in whom the development of emotional intelligence will be high, that person will high manage and respond correctly to his own and others' emotions.
According to Goleman, emotional intelligence is necessary to establish the ideal of an individual. The responsibility of the relationship between the individual and the society depends on the emotional intelligence.
• Goleman Emotional Intelligence Theory
Self Awareness : The ability to understand your emotions, strengths and weaknesses.
Self Management : The ability to manage one's motivations and regulate behaviours.
Social Awareness : The ability to understand the actions, experiences and causes of others.
Social Skills : The ability to achieve results deprived of others by one's own behavior and to achieve personal goals.
According to Goleman, emotional abilities are required to be successful in different areas of life and that is why Goleman has called his model 'Theory of Performance'.
• Emotional Quotient
Emotional quotient is used to tell the amount of emotional intelligence of a person in the same way as intelligence quotient is used. Generally, emotional intelligence is the ability to process emotional information accurately and efficiently.
The first measurement to emotional quotient was done by Barone in 1987 at the University of Trent, Canada. Mayer-salovey-caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) (Hampshire University) was created by Dr. Mayer, Salovey and David R Caruso.
• What are the 5 characteristics of emotional intelligence?
Following are the characteristics of a person with high emotional intelligence :
1. Knowing and being sensitive to your feelings and emotions.
2. Knowing and being sensitive to the various emotions of other people by paying attention to their body, language, voice and tone of voice and quick expressions.
3. Relating your emotions to your thoughts so that they can be taken into account when solving problems and making decisions.
4. Understanding the powerful effect of the nature and intensity of your emotions.
5. Controlling your emotions and their expressions while dealing with others, so as to achieve peace and harmony.
