The book Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue was co-authored by American author Sam Harris and British activist Maajid Nawaz in 2015. The book was then made into a documentary film with the same name. The book is written in the style of a discussion between Harris, an atheist and religious critic, and Nawaz, an Islamist-turned-liberal activist. Harris claims that Islam's ideas are hazardous, but Nawaz defends Islam by claiming that the tradition has avoided those dangerous doctrines. Nawaz continues by claiming that Islam, like any other faith, is open to reform and will find a place in a secular world. The book was written with the express goal of advancing challenging discussions about Islam without "devolving into intolerance or caricature." The book also delves into the contrasts between Islamism and Islamism as a religion.
