Auxiliary Verbs (Misplaced Words)

বিশেষ কারণ ছাড়া auxiliary verb সাধারণতঃ principal verb এর আগে বসে। Negative interrogative sentence-এর subject যদি এক শব্দ বিশিষ্ট হয় তাহলে not শব্দটি subject-এর পরে বসে। যেমন,

Did he not go to school?

কিন্তু এক্ষেত্রে subject যদি একটি phrase হয় তাহলে not শব্দটি auxiliary verb এর সঙ্গে subject-এর আগে বসে। যেমন,

Right: Did not your children go to school? 

Wrong: Did your children not go to school?

কিন্তু informal conversational ইংরেজীতে not সর্বদাই auxiliary verb-এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়ে যায়। যেমন,

Didn't they/ your children go to school.

Auxiliary verb-এর একাধিক অংশ থাকলে interrogative sentence এ শুধুমাত্র তার প্রথম অংশটি subject-এর আগে বসে। যেমন,

Right: Should he have been invited?

Wrong: Should have he been invited?

Wrong: Should have been he invited? 

Right: Used he to come here?

Wrong: Used to he come here?
