Subject (Misplaced Words)

যে কোন assertive sentence বা statement-এর ক্ষেত্রে subject সাধারণতঃ সব ধরনের verb-এর আগে বসে। যেমন, 

The patient had died before the doctor came.

কিন্তু বিশেষ বিশেষ ক্ষেত্রে এই নিয়মের ব্যতিক্রম ঘটে। যেমন, hardly, scarcely, barely, no sooner জাতীয় শব্দগুলি যখন বাক্যের প্রথমে বসে তখন subject-টি auxiliary verb-এর পরে চলে যায়। অর্থাৎ এক্ষেত্রে assertive sentence-এর word order হবে প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যের মত। যেমন,

Right: Hardly had the match started when it began to rain.

Wrong: Hardly the match had started when it began to rain.

Right: No sooner had we reached the station than the train left.

Wrong: No sooner we had reached the station than the train left.

Never, seldom, rarely, neither, nor, কিংবা not only দিয়ে শুরু হলেও subject-এর অবস্থানের উপরোল্লেখিত পরিবর্তন হবে। যেমন,

Wrong: Never I have seen such a thing. Right: Never have I seen such a thing.

"Either----or" কিংবা "neither...nor" subject কে সংযুক্ত করা হয় তখন বহুবচনের subject টিকে verb এর কাছাকাছি বসাতে হয়। যেমন,

Right: Either he or his brohters are responsible for this.

Wrong: Either his brothers or he is responsible for this. 

Right: Neither Salam nor his friends were present there.

Wrong: Neither his friends nor he was present there.
