Wrong Use of Conjunctions
So .... as & As ...... as: These two correlative conjunctions are used interchangably by many but according to precise usage as ...... as is used in positive case and So ...... as is used in negative cases.
(এই দুইটি correlative conjunction অনেকেই interchangably ব্যবহার করলেও precise usage অনুসারে as ......as ব্যবহৃত হয় positive ক্ষেত্রে এবং So......as ব্যবহৃত হয় negative ক্ষেত্রে।)
For Examples:
Wrong: Belal is not as tall as his father.
Right: Belal is not so tall as his father.
Wrong: Rina is so beautiful as Bina.
Right: Rina is as beautiful as Bina.
The second as of this conjunction should not be omitted under any circumstances. (এই Conjunction টির দ্বিতীয় as টিকে কোন অবস্থাতেই বাদ দেওয়া চলবে না।)
For Examples:
Wrong: Harun is as reliable and sometimes more reliable than his brother.
Right: Harun is as reliable as and sometimes more reliable than his brother.
As can never be used as an alternative to that or whether. (As কে কখনো that বা whether এর বিকল্প হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।)
For Examples:
Wrong: I don't know as I should go.
Right: I don't know whether / that I should go.
Either ...... or & Neither ... nor: These two conjunctions are used only for two persons or two objects. None of these can be used for more than two persons or objects.
Moreover, either is usually used in a positive sentence and neither is usually used in a negative sentence.
For Examples:
Wrong: Either Helal, Belal, or Jalil will go there.
Right: Helal Belal, or Jalil will go there.
Right: Either Helal or Belal will go there.
Wrong: Either Helal or Belal is not honest.
Right: Neither Helal nor Belal is honest.
Wrong: He will marry neither Rina, Bina, nor Nazma.
Right: He will marry neither Rina nor Bina.
Right: He will marry none of Rina, Bina and Nazma.
After either or neither , Verb or Pronoun will be used on the basis of the second subject.
(Either কিংবা neither-এর পরে verb কিংবা pronoun ব্যবহৃত হবে দ্বিতীয় subject-এর ভিত্তিতে।)
For Examples:
Wrong: Neither Belal nor Bina were in their office.
Right: Neither Belal nor Bina was in her office.
