Former Montreal Canadiens Defenseman Likely Heading Overseas

According to Sasha Huttunen, multiple SM-liiga teams are expressing interest in Sami Niku. Huttunen also noted that JYP Jyvaskyla is the expected frontrunner to land him.

Niku spent this past season with the Canadiens. He appeared in just 13 games with the NHL club, though, where he recorded six assists. With their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, he had two goals and 13 points in 36 contests.

Niku's contract with the Jets was terminated before the start of the season. The 2015 seventh-round pick was hoping to land a full-time gig in the NHL, but that did not happen with Montreal. Now, it appears that he will be heading overseas for a bigger role back home. Let's see what happens from here.
