Nury Martinez resigns from LA city council after racist remarks leaked

The former city council president faced intense pressure to step down, including from Joe Biden

The embattled former president of the LA city council stepped down from the board on Wednesday, days after a recording surfaced of three Latino council members using racist language to mock colleagues and constituents while they planned to protect Latino political strength in council districts.

Nury Martinez announced her resignation on Wednesday, after having previously stepped down as the council’s president. Martinez and two other council members captured on the recordings, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, faced widespread calls to relinquish their seats, including from Joe Biden.
