UN security council holds urgent session on Haiti’s call for assistance

Scheduled session brought forward in view of dire conditions – rampant gang violence, a cholera outbreak and escalating famine

The UN security council is holding an urgent session on Monday afternoon to debate Haiti’s call for security assistance in the face of rampant gang violence, a cholera outbreak and an escalating famine.

The session will also discuss a US-Mexican draft resolution that would impose targeted sanctions on gang leaders like Jimmy Chérizier, a former police officer known as “Barbecue”, who leads a gang alliance called G9 and Family.
